THE GIRL, THE MYTH, THE COPYWRITER.
In 7th grade, I opened a fortune cookie in my school cafeteria that told me, "The best thing to do is not be yourself".
Hold up. To "NOT" be myself? Excuse me?! Initially, my young self was insulted. Was this some kind of joke that fell into the wrong —and very sensitive — hands?
But I have since found a lesson in that little white paper in a way that may have been intended (but probably not). To be successful in life and as a writer, I need to put myself in the mindset of others. What do they believe? How would this make them feel? What are their wants and needs? Every task I am given and each piece of writing I create, I do through the eyes of my audience. With their interests and aspirations in mind.
Because you can say the same message a hundred different ways, but it’s only when you say it the right way that people will actually hear you.
Although in reality, I'm sure that fortune cookie was just a bad typo.
And that's lesson #2 — always proofread.
